Orthognathic Surgery

Patient Specific Orthognathic Surgery

Lyka Smith offers the ability for surgeons to plan orthognathic cases both physically and digitally through our virtual surgical planning process. Our digital workflow enables case work and planning to vary depending on surgeon preference.

Occlusal splints can be designed and produced from CT/CBCT scans alone, with intraoral scans or via digitization of plaster models.

Virtual planning enables guided osteotomy and screw positioning, avoiding nerve and or tooth root damage.

Complex, simultaneous yaw and cant corrections, the ability to account for posterior impaction bone interferences and soft tissue simulations allow for greater certainty and precision in planning.

Splint Design Freedom

3D Printing enables splints to be designed with all attributes required to achieve the perfect fit and function. Palatal brace/bridge, IMF wire holes, deep impressions and midline indicators are all possible design features which can be included with our digital orthognathic splints.

Lyka Smith can produce splints direct from teeth models, impressions or where required via CT/CBCT scan files removing the need for intra-oral scan or impression taking.

Splints are produced in a rigid clear biocompatible 3D printed material, to an accuracy of 27 microns our digital 3D printed splints can be sterilised using a variety of hospital processes.

Expedited delivery options enable Lyka Smith to supply completed orthognathic splints within 3 business days Australia wide.

Segmentation Cutting Guide

Segmental cutting guides are available to offer more control over maxillary segmentation. Provide us with your saw or tool dimensions and our engineers will fabricate a custom titanium cutting guide to help avoid anatomical structures like tooth roots.

Material Choice

Our custom surgical guides can be made from various materials depending on your clinical needs.

Customise your surgical guide design

Your orthognathic surgical guides can be customised to your preferences. Material, design, cutting slots, pilot holes and registration are the surgeon’s choice.

For example tooth borne mandible cutting guides can allow less site preparation and have good registration.

Lyka Smith can supply our orthognathic instrumentation kit designed with our 2.0mm screws, IMF kit, transbuccal kit and lingual drivers.

Our engineers can use CT only to plan and design your orthognathic case.

If you have analog models we can organise collection and digitise them also.

If you have an intraoral scanner these can be exported to the engineers in STL format.

We provide a free intraoral scanning service for those clinicians without access to a scanner.

A fine slice protocol can allow for CT only planning but we always recommend intraoral scans.

Scatter caused by dental restorations and improper positioning during the CT can interfere with a clear fitting surface for tooth borne splints when creating a 3D model during segmentation.

An intraoral scan capturing the dental surfaces allows the engineers to combine these with CT data creating a more precise fit for your custom splints. With the ability to capture soft tissue of the palate this also aids in manufacturing any palatal splints.

Yes. If you prefer to set your own occlusion Lyka Smith can provide 3D printed models for set up and scanning.

Patient photos, measurements and planned movements will allow our engineers to set up the case prior to your virtual planning session.

Yes. We often have the patient’s orthodontist join virtual planning sessions. Just advise us prior to booking the VSP.
